What is Kon-X (Youthority)?
Kon-X (born out of Youthority) is a consent-led family connection and youth safety management platform created by child protection specialist Laura Chappell. Drawing on over 25 years of youth work experience, Laura set out to solve a glaring problem: existing safety apps rely on invasive, constant surveillance that damages family trust and makes young people want to disable or bypass the app.
After receiving early Figma UX wireframes from a startup accelerator, Laura partnered with Techne HQ to execute a complete ground-up technical expansion. Over an intensive 7-week sprint, Techne HQ workshops and strategized directly with Laura, designing over 50 additional pages of UX screens to establish a privacy-first data exchange framework. This gives young people control over when and with whom they share location or request help, while giving caregivers total peace of mind.

Engineering Safety Without Surveillance
Most family apps treat safety as a one-way surveillance feed. To create a platform that young people would actually want to use and trust, Techne HQ and Laura Chappell focused on three core technical challenges:
Restructuring Dual-Persona App Logic: We work-shopped and strategized extensively with Laura, adding over 50 additional pages of UX design on top of the initial accelerator screens. This expanded the platform to include distinct, highly tailored interfaces for both caregivers and young people (aged 10 to 24) that balance real-time safety triggers with strict child data privacy.
Consent-First Location & Alert Engine: Re-architecting traditional tracking mechanics so location sharing is active by choice or emergency trigger, rather than continuous background surveillance.
Translating Figma Wireframes into Production Code: Converting static UI concepts into battle-tested native iOS and Android apps connected to a secure enterprise backend capable of handling sub-second emergency alerts.
7-Week Systems Re-Architecture & Full-Stack Engineering
01 · Child Privacy & Permission Framework Architecture
Techne HQ completely restructured the data exchange rules between child and adult profiles. We engineered a granular permission engine where young people control their trusted circles, granting temporary or event-based visibility. This psychological safety model ensures young people feel respected, leading to 3x higher retention than passive tracking tools.
02 · Native Mobile Engineering (Swift & Kotlin)
We engineered the Kon-X mobile platform natively using Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. Native performance ensured instant alert triggers, sub-second GPS rendering during emergency check-ins, and smooth offline caching when cellular data is limited.
03 · Scalable Java/SpringBoot & AWS Cloud Backend
Techne HQ deployed an enterprise-grade backend built with Java and SpringBoot on AWS Cloud Infrastructure. Utilizing Amazon RDS (MySQL) for relational account data, Amazon S3 for media, and AWS Secrets Manager for end-to-end encryption, we ensured that sensitive family location data is protected by bank-level security.
04 · Custom Admin & Safety Management Portal
To support Laura’s ongoing operations and resource delivery, Techne HQ engineered an administrative portal where system administrators can manage platform settings, deploy safety resources for caregivers, and monitor real-time system performance without touching database code.

FAQ
Got specific questions?
How does Kon-X differ technically from traditional family safety and tracking apps?
Traditional tracking apps stream continuous background location data. Kon-X uses a consent-first architecture engineered by Techne HQ, where location data and alerts are shared through event-triggered permissions and trusted circles, preserving youth autonomy while delivering instant caregiver reassurance.
Why was an intensive 7-week re-architecture sprint necessary for Kon-X?
Converting static Figma wireframes into a production-grade app required adding over 50 pages of missing UX workflows, re-architecting the backend database, defining edge-case permission rules between adult and child profiles, and building a secure Java/AWS backend capable of real-time alert routing.
How does Techne HQ ensure child data privacy and security in youth apps?
Techne HQ implements end-to-end encryption, AWS Secrets Manager credential hardening, and role-based data isolation so that family location and contact data can only be accessed by verified members of a user's trusted circle.
